Ian Kelsey and Nicola Sloane are to star in a new revival of John Godber’s comedy drama September in the Rain at Salisbury Playhouse.

The casting was announced by artistic director Gareth Machin and executive director Sebastian Warrack of the theatre’s operator, Wiltshire Creative, ahead of the play’s run from 16 September to 9 October.

With Machin as director, the creative team also includes designer Toots Butcher, lighting designer Johanna Town, sound designer Andrea J Cox and casting director Gabrielle Dawes.

September in the Rain, originally staged in 1983, follows a Yorkshire couple, Jack and Liz, from their first trip to Blackpool together in 1950 through subsequent week-long holidays over 30 years. Moving backwards and forward through time, it reveals a married life through squabbles, children, laughter and tears against the backdrop of the heyday of the British seaside.

Kelsey has been a series regular in many TV continuing dramas including Dave Glover in Emmerdale, Vinny Ashford in Coronation Street, Alex Wakefield in Doctors and Dr Patrick Spiller in Casualty, as well as starring in series including Blue Murder, Hotel Babylon, Down to Earth and Where the Heart Is.

His theatre work includes Legally Blonde at Curve in Leicester, the UK tour of The Shawshank Redemption, Billy Flynn in Chicago in the West End and the UK tour and West End production of Grease.

Sloane’s extensive screen and stage credits include Two Cities for Wiltshire Creative, GHBoy at Charing Cross Theatre, Our Town at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Frankenstein and To Kill a Mockingbird at Manchester’s Royal Exchange, and Love in Idleness and A Little Night Music at Menier Chocolate Factory in London.
