New Perspectives and Stute Theatre are collaborating on Love Down the Line – short love-themed dramas performed live over the telephone for Valentine’s weekend.

New Perspectives

Theatre company New Perspectives is to present plays that will be performed live by actors down the phone over Valentine’s Day weekend.

The short, love-themed dramas, Love Down the Line, have been created in a collaboration with rural theatremaker Sophia Hatfield who runs Stute Theatre.

The “bite-sized” plays will be available every 15 minutes on 13 February between 2pm and 9.45pm and 14 February between 11am and 8.45pm.

They have been written by Hatfield with Jack McNamara to be staged for an audience of just one at a time. They will be performed live by Hatfield and Nottingham-based actor Ollie Smith on alternating slots, directed by McNamara.

Love Down the Line is the latest effort by East Midlands-based New Perspectives to play with form and to experiment how intimate theatre can exist in lockdown.

Hatfield said: “Telephone theatre is an innovative way of bringing an immersive live experience to audiences whilst also allowing performers to work from home. I can’t wait to spread some joy and share a bit of quality live theatre with our audiences this Valentine’s.”

McNamara, who is artistic director of New Perspectives, added: “In the digital swamp we find ourselves in, I feel a renewed love for older forms of communication in all their creaky beauty. Following on from touring theatre on postcards, we were
soon drawn to the telephone medium as a way of creating a new intimacy with audiences across different generations.

“Sophia Hatfield has already broken ground with this old/new medium, telephoning audiences throughout 2020 and we are thrilled to be bringing her discoveries into our mix to offer something truly different this Valentines.”

Other recent productions from New Perspectives have included WhatsApp drama Stay Safe, a series of Christmas cards, and their internationally successful postcard drama Love From Cleethorpes which has reached over 2,000 letterboxes in 26 countries.

Tickets for Love Down the Line cost £5 per performance via New Perspectives. It is available for UK phone numbers only.
