The Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre opened in 1895, the Hippodrome Birmingham is the busiest single theatre in the United Kingdom presenting opera, ballet, musicals, drama and pantomime.

Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre is the latest of the buildings to stand on the current theatre site. The name Birmingham Hippodrome started being used in 1903 in relation to the neo-classical auditorium which seats approx 1900.

The Hippodrome, Birmingham was sold to Birmingham City Council in 1979 and is operated by the Theatre Trust which is a registered charity.

Possibly the United Kingdom’s single busiest theatre, The Hippodrome is a first-class touring theatre presenting major tours of large scale musicals including the likes of The Book Of Mormon, Matilda, and The Lion King.

The Hippodrome is the home stage for the Birmingham Royal Ballet, also playing host to opera and other ballet companies attracting regular annual attendances of over 600,000 patrons per annum. It is the busiest venue for dance outside of London.

In October 2020, the Birmingham City Council have approved a phased redevelopment of the theatre with work commencing in 2021. The Hippodrome was temporarily closed from March 2020 due to the Corona Virus pandemic.

One of the theatres major attractions each year is the pantomime at Christmas which in the past has included personalities like Brian Conley, Don Maclean, Marti Pellow, Beverley Knight, Joe McElderry, Julian Clary, John Barrowman, Joan Collins and Nigel Havers in their casts.
